Stamps Aid to Focus on Basic Writing Skills

3 step peer and self assessment stamp set

Designed by an infant school to introduce Year 1 pupils to self and peer assessment, these stamps are a progressive 3 stage set beginning with a simple 3 point / skills checklist which progresses to be more detailed as the children progress by age / level.

The school introduced the stamps to Year 1 for self assessment on independent work and have also used them as a guide for peer assessment too. The objective being to provide a great focus on the very basics of writing.

Developing an effective self and peer assessment approach in school takes considerable time and effort. However, research has shown that once fully integrated into everyday teaching and learning, both approaches can be very effective in motivating pupils to progress their learning, thereby facilitating teaching.
Starting self and peer assessment in early in Year 1 makes perfect sense as long as it is done carefully, ensuring they are not overwhelmed by the task. Done right it provides sense of responsibility and control that the majority of children will respond to.
